A thigh lift aims to improve contour by addressing significant excess skin, mostly on the inner thighs, and limited fat tissue when necessary. It is not the same procedure as liposuction; incision and scar length vary according to the distribution of sagging.

What Is a Thigh Lift?

After major weight loss and aging, thigh skin can lose its elasticity. If the excess is only around the groin, a horizontal incision may be needed; if it extends along the leg, a vertical incision may be needed. Each technique has a different scar and lifting power.

The groin and thigh region requires special follow-up for wound healing because of lymphatic vessels, moisture, friction and movement.

Who May Be a Candidate?

  • Adults with a stable weight and significant excess skin on the thighs
  • People who understand the incision site, scar length and the burden of wound healing
  • People found suitable in terms of blood clot, lymphatic, smoking and chronic disease risks
  • People who can follow compression and activity restrictions

How Does the Process Work?

  1. Excess skin is marked while standing and removed within safe circulation limits.
  2. If necessary, liposuction is added in a controlled manner; efforts are made to preserve lymphatic structures.
  3. Tension on the wound line is reduced with layered closure and compression.

Expected change in body contour

The aim is to reduce excess skin and improve thigh contour; cellulite and all surface irregularities may not disappear completely. Weight change affects the result.

Alternatives and complementary options

For predominantly fatty cases with good skin elasticity, liposuction may be considered; for mild laxity, energy-based treatments. They do not remove significant excess skin as effectively as surgery.

The basis of personalized planning

Planning 1It is examined whether the excess skin is limited to the groin or extends toward the knee.
Planning 2Amount of fat, skin quality, lymphedema/varicose veins, history of blood clots and previous surgeries are reviewed.
Planning 3Horizontal/vertical incision, combination with liposuction, drains and compression options are explained.
Planning 4Blood clot prevention, wound care, toileting/hygiene and support at home are planned.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thigh lift the same as liposuction?

No. Liposuction targets fat tissue, while a lift targets excess skin; they can be combined in suitable cases.

Where is the scar?

Depending on the location of the excess, it may be in the groin crease, on the inner thigh or both.

Can I have surgery if I have varicose veins?

Circulation and blood clot risk are assessed separately; a vascular surgery opinion may be needed.

Will cellulite go away completely?

No. Skin tension can change its appearance; it does not eliminate all causes of cellulite.

Possible risks and complications

  • Bleeding, infection, seroma and wound separation
  • Lymphatic swelling, changes in sensation and skin circulation problems
  • Visible/widened scarring and pulling at the groin line
  • Deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, asymmetry and revision

Recovery and follow-up

Tightness when walking, swelling, bruising and tenderness may occur. Early safe mobilization helps reduce the risk of blood clots; intense exercise and movements that spread the legs widely are resumed after a check-up. Pain and swelling in one leg or shortness of breath is an emergency.
