Breast reduction is surgery that reshapes the breast while reducing excess breast and skin tissue and moves the nipple to a suitable position. In addition to appearance, it may aim to reduce complaints such as neck and back pain, bra strap grooves, skin irritation and restricted physical activity.

What Is Breast Reduction?

Complaints caused by breast size are not assessed only by weight or bra size. Body proportions, the breast base, tissue density, skin quality and the impact on the person's life are considered together.

The amount of tissue that can be removed and the scar plan are limited by preserving nipple circulation, safe shaping and realistic proportions. An exact size or perfect symmetry is not promised.

The basis of personalized planning

Planning 1Breast measurements, sagging, asymmetry, nipple position, and skin and tissue quality are recorded.
Planning 2Neck and back complaints, skin irritation, pregnancy/breastfeeding plans and weight changes are reviewed.
Planning 3Smoking, bleeding and clotting risk, chronic diseases and family history of breast cancer are assessed.
Planning 4The scar pattern, expected tissue reduction, pathology examination and follow-up plan are explained.

Who May Be a Candidate?

  • Adults with physical complaints due to breast weight or significant proportion problems
  • People whose weight is as stable as possible and whose general health is suitable for surgery
  • People who understand the risks of scarring and changes in sensation and breastfeeding
  • People who have completed a breast examination and imaging appropriate to age/risk

How Does the Process Work?

  1. Excess breast and skin tissue is removed using the planned technique; the breast tissue is shaped in a more balanced way.
  2. The nipple–areola complex is moved while preserving its circulation and, as much as possible, its sensory connections.
  3. Pathological evaluation of the removed tissue is planned according to institutional and clinical requirements.

Possible risks and complications

  • Bleeding, infection, seroma, wound separation and visible scarring
  • Loss of circulation/sensation in the nipple and, rarely, tissue loss
  • Asymmetry, fat necrosis, shape irregularity and revision
  • Reduced or lost breastfeeding capacity
  • General surgical risks such as anesthesia and deep vein thrombosis

Recovery and follow-up

Swelling, bruising, tightness and changes in sensation may occur. Wound lines, especially in the inframammary fold, are checked regularly. Support bra and activity restrictions are given individually; the final shape and appearance of the scars mature over months.

Results, scars and limitations of the method

Physical complaints may decrease in many people; however, if the pain has other causes, it may not disappear completely. Breast shape continues to change over time with pregnancy, aging and weight changes.

Alternatives and complementary options

If there is excess weight, safe weight management can reduce some complaints; a support bra and skincare can help. Non-surgical methods do not reduce significant excess tissue in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Does breast reduction definitely relieve pain?

It can reduce complaints caused by breast weight; if there are other spinal or muscular causes, complete relief is not guaranteed.

How is the amount of reduction decided?

Body proportions, tissue safety, nipple circulation and the person's goals are evaluated together; bra size alone is not decisive.

Is breastfeeding affected?

Yes, depending on the technique, the milk ducts and glandular tissue may be affected. Pregnancy plans should be discussed during the examination.

Do the scars fade over time?

Scars mature and may fade; they do not disappear completely. Individual wound healing is decisive.

Before deciding: Breast imaging, pregnancy/breastfeeding plans and individual risks can change the choice of procedure; online information does not replace a definitive surgical plan.
