A breast lift is surgery that aims to reshape sagging breast tissue, move the nipple–areola complex to a suitable position and remove excess skin. On its own, it does not provide a significant increase in volume; if volume is needed, implants or fat transfer are evaluated separately.
What Is a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight change, aging and genetics can cause breast tissue to sag. The plan is based on the degree of sagging, breast volume, skin quality, asymmetry and nipple position.
Periareolar, vertical or inverted-T scar options are not merely an aesthetic preference; they are chosen for the necessary tissue shaping and safe circulation. A shorter scar is not always better or more suitable.
The basis of personalized planning
| Planning 1 | Breast volume, degree of sagging, skin quality, nipple circulation and the measurements of both sides are assessed. |
|---|---|
| Planning 2 | Pregnancy/breastfeeding plans, weight changes, smoking, breast disease and family history are reviewed. |
| Planning 3 | Imaging appropriate to age/risk and, if necessary, other specialist opinions are planned. |
| Planning 4 | It is clearly explained that there is no scarless breast lift, as well as the balance between scars, volume and shape. |
Who May Be a Candidate?
- Adults with a low nipple position, excess skin and sagging tissue
- People with a stable weight and no plans for pregnancy in the near future
- People who understand scarring, possible changes in sensation/breastfeeding and the risk of sagging again
- People who have completed a breast examination and the necessary imaging
How Does the Process Work?
- Excess skin is removed according to the planned pattern and the breast tissue is shaped higher up.
- The nipple–areola complex is moved to its new position while preserving its circulation.
- If volume is insufficient, implants/fat, or if excessive, limited reduction may be considered in the same or a separate session.
Possible risks and complications
- Bleeding, infection, wound separation and visible/widened scars
- Loss of sensation or circulation in the nipple; rarely, tissue loss
- Asymmetry, shape irregularity and recurrent sagging
- Changes in breastfeeding capacity and the need for revision
Recovery and follow-up
Swelling, bruising, tightness and temporary changes in nipple sensation may occur. Support bra, sleeping position, arm movement and sports restrictions are given according to the personal plan. Scars mature over months.
Results, scars and limitations of the method
The aim is to bring the breast into an anatomically higher and more balanced position. Gravity, pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging and weight changes may affect the result over time.
Alternatives and complementary options
For mild sagging, an implant alone can sometimes increase upper pole volume; however, it does not correct significant excess skin. Postponing the procedure, a support bra or other volume adjustment options may be considered.
Frequently asked questions
Does a breast lift make the breasts bigger?
On its own, it generally does not add volume; it reshapes the existing tissue. Implants or fat transfer can be planned separately for volume.
Will there be scars after a breast lift?
Yes. The type of scar varies according to the degree of sagging and the shaping required; there is no scarless surgery.
Can I breastfeed after surgery?
Breastfeeding may be affected depending on the technique used and the person's anatomy. Plans for future pregnancy should be discussed in advance.
Will the breasts sag again?
Tissue changes continue over time. Weight change, pregnancy and skin quality can affect recurrent sagging.
Before deciding: Breast imaging, pregnancy/breastfeeding plans and individual risks can change the choice of procedure; online information does not replace a definitive surgical plan.
