Hair transplantation is the relocation of follicular units taken from a suitable donor area to bald or thinning areas. It does not create new hair follicles; the result depends on donor capacity, the progression of hair loss, preservation of the follicles and a natural distribution plan.
How Is a Hair Transplant Planned?
Hair loss may have androgenetic, scarring, inflammatory, hormonal or nutrition-related causes. A transplant performed without controlling active disease may fail, or natural hair loss may continue.
FUE is a method in which follicles are extracted one by one; DHI usually describes the implantation tool. The name of the technique alone is not a guarantee of quality. The physician's diagnosis, donor management and the medical responsibilities of the team should be clear.
What is assessed during the examination?

- Adults whose cause of hair loss has been evaluated and who have sufficient donor area capacity
- People who understand that hair loss may progress in the future and that medical treatment may be needed
- People with realistic expectations regarding density and hairline
- People without active scalp infection or uncontrolled scarring disease
How Does the Process Work?
- The donor area is prepared and follicular units are harvested in a controlled manner under local anesthesia.
- Recipient sites are opened according to the direction, angle and density plan, or a suitable implantation technique is used.
- Grafts are protected outside the body and implanted; excessive thinning of the donor area is avoided.
- The washing, crusting, medication and follow-up schedule is provided in writing.
Recovery and follow-up
Swelling, redness, crusting, tenderness and temporary numbness may occur. Shedding of the transplanted hairs in the early period can be expected; new growth from the follicles takes time. Severe pain, foul-smelling discharge, fever or discoloration of the tissue should be assessed.
Hairline, density and long-term planning
Results develop gradually over months, and the final density is limited by the donor area. A hair transplant does not stop existing genetic hair loss; medical follow-up may be needed for the remaining hair.
Alternatives and complementary options
Depending on the diagnosis, physician-prescribed treatments such as minoxidil and 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, an evidence review regarding platelet-rich plasma, scalp micropigmentation or hair systems may be options.
Frequently asked questions
Does a hair transplant completely stop hair loss?
No. The transplanted follicles may be resistant; genetic hair loss may continue in the existing natural hair.
What is the difference between FUE and DHI?
FUE refers to the follicle extraction method, while DHI usually refers to the implantation tool; candidacy and results depend on more than the name of the technique.
How many grafts are transplanted?
It is determined by measuring donor capacity and the target area; a higher number is not always safer or better.
When does the transplanted hair grow?
